Cast Limestone (Scagliola) is as rich in texture as it is in history. It was a technique developed by impoverished Italian monks in the 17th century who were attempting the restoration of a monastery deep in the mountains of central Italy. They found that an aggregate of crushed limestone chips, stabilizing agents, and pigments could be combined to form a material indistiguishable from the original stone. As a result the technique and material known as scagliola lime stone was born. You can see a variety of Mantels using this method.
